Display herbarium

The display herbarium, created in the 1960s, is a unique collection of herbarium specimens of 2843 Swiss plant species from 137 families, displayed in 261 beautifully arranged panels. Its purpose is to teach students and other interested parties the characteristics of Swiss plant families by displaying several specimens per family, demonstrating similarities and differences within each family.

For the time being, the display herbarium is stored in a locked collection room at the Herbarium Bernense, since there is currently no exhibition room available. We are therefore happy to already provide online access to this beautiful collection. In addition to the taxonomic information written on the panels from 1960, we added the current information on species and family affiliation based on World Flora Online (2026).

All photographs and part of the taxonomic update were compiled in context of a research practical by Matteo Trachsel.
